Wonderful Literature: Cova Reviews | P.S. I Still Love You, by Jenny Han

Hi there! So here we are again. Hope you all had a great start of the year wherever you are in the world :) Back at reviewing you will see me, as should be. And for the first review of 2017, I shall write about the second novel to the YA, contemporary To All the Boys I've Loved Before trilogy by Jenny Han, P.S. I Still Love You. This review will be spoiler-free for both the second and first novels of the series, so don't worry if you haven't read To All the Boys I've Loved Before yet, although I'd advise you to go read the review for that one first? 😛

I was literally dying to read this novel right after I finished the first part to the trilogy, but I had finals (why?! 😓), and I had to be good - so I left it to read at the end of the month. And, oh boy, was it worth the wait!

P.S. I Still Love You is a great continuation to the story presented in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which definitely left an open ending for a second book. If you've read the first book, you'll probably guess what the second one is about -it's no surprise, really. But the way Jenny Han adds an extra story inside our main story, I just loved! The letters that were sent to the boys still have an importance in P.S. I Still Love You, and characters that had been mentioned and seem rather important in the first book but barely appeared in it, come to life in this second part. The love story takes an unexpected turn, but it still is obvious that Jenny Han is amazing at creating cute love scenes that make me wish I had any of her male characters as my boyfriend! Honestly, the romantic parts of her books are just great.

Something else that I really like about these books it that the characters, specifically Lara Jean, are real. Lara Jean makes choices that any real teenage girl would make, and she worries about stuff that I would worry about if I was in her position. That is certainly refreshing.

Also, as 2017 is the year of book-related diversity, I should mention that, although the setting is clearly Western, in this series Jenny Han has included some of her own Corean inheritance and traditions. The main characters are half-American, half-Corean, and in both books we see that Lara Jean's family -especially their dad- tries to keep the Corean culture present in their lives even though they are so far away from their family's homeland. I really appreciated this change from what I'm used to reading :) I think it makes this book be even more unique.

About the ending, it actually seems as if the story is completely finished. Cute, satisfying ending to the novel and the series. It was going to be a duology, but a third book is being published May 2017. I don't think it is really necessary to complete the story, but I will definitely be reading it (it's already pre-ordered hehe!) -hoping it's as good as the previous two.

P.S. I Still Love You did not let me down -it was a great read that I enjoyed A LOT. It was funny, it had an interesting story and I read it in two sittings. Once again, Jenny Han reminded me that I actually do like contemporary literature -I had unfortunately not been very lucky with my contemporary reads lately... So over all, I think P.S. I Still Love You deserves 4.5 out of 5 stars. I really recommend it!
