Top 5 Wednesday 5 | Books Without Romance

Hello one Wednesday more! It's Top 5 Wednesday time and, although this week's topic is "Books That Aren't Set In/Inspired By The Western World", I am going to write a post about the topic of two Wednesdays ago because I've come to the astonishing realisation that I can only talk about three books that I've read that aren't set in the Western World - thus those would be my top 3, but also my least favourite 3! These are all the books I've ever read that are not set in or inspired by the Western World:

Books Without Romance

This post is going to be hard too because I do love books with at least a romantic side-story to spice them up... But let's do this!

Ready Player One - Ernest Cline

Ready Player One is a YA, science fiction, dystopian novel set around the year 2040, where everyone spends their days at the OASIS -a virtual reality created for people to play, work and even go to school while escaping the super polluted and destroyed reality. The creator of the OASIS dies and leaves a message saying he's hidden an Easter egg inside the game, and whoever finds it will win his entire fortune -including the ownership of the giant virtual reality. I loved this book - the plot, the characters, and the writing. Technically, it does include some romance, but it's just so little that I don't count it as being a "romance book". Plus, I just needed a reason to talk about this book, so! You can find my full review here :)

The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Bernett

I feel like I've talked about The Secret Garden so much lately, and I read it around 8 years ago! It follows a little girl that is sent to live with her uncle in a huge mansion with one hundred rooms. She finds a beautiful garden, but it's locked with a missing key, which she now has to find. I remember reading this book in my local library and loving it, and then I forgot all about it until a book with a similar title was published, and I just couldn't stop thinking about it! I have to find a way to re-read it soon because it was beautiful! 

Le Syndrome Copernic - Henri Loevenbruck

Le Syndrome Copernic just blew my mind! It's adult fiction (thriller) about mental health - particularly schizophrenia. It is such a delightful read in which you realise how hard it can be for people suffering from hallucinations and delusions to distinguish what is real from what is not. I freaking loved this book! It was originally published in French but, unfortunately, it hasn't been translated into English. I read it in Spanish, and it has been translated to other languages as well. If you can find it in a language you can read, I'd say you go for it because it is hundred percent worth your while. 

Bird Box - Josh Malerman

I bought this book when I went to Greece for my Senior Year Trip. I looked at the cover, read the back of the book and instantly decided that it must be on my shelves. It's another dystopian, though this time it's also horror. Reading the back is enough:

If you've seen what's out there... it's already too late.

Most people dismissed the reports on the news. 

But they became too frequent; they became too real. 

And soon it was happening to people we knew. 

Then the Internet died. 

The televisions and radios went silent. 

The phones stopped ringing 

And we couldn't look outside anymore.

Before I Go to Sleep - S.J. Watson

This is another thriller that absolutely blew my mind. People compare it to Gone Girl, but I have to admit I've never read it, so I wouldn't know. It follows a woman named Christine that has anterograde amnesia, which means she can't form any new memories. Everything she does that day, she forgets by the next morning, and she wakes up thinking she's in her twenties, still in college. But there is something that doesn't match. Oh boy, did I love this book! That plot twist!
